Has The Ferentz Magic Worn Off?
Well today was the end to a disappointing season for the Iowa Hawkeyes, which featured losses to Minnesota and in-state rival Iowa State. The Hawks have finished the regular season 7-5 for the second consecutive year. I’m getting really sick of these mediocre seasons. I understand that the Hawks have lost several players to the NFL recently and they’ve gone through down years before, but that doesn’t excuse losses to the likes of Minnesota and Iowa State. Iowa has a history of losing games they shouldn’t. Northwestern has been a thorn in our side for years and the Iowa State game is always a toss up.
I blame the coaching staff. The team isn’t ready for these games. Have Kirk, Ken, and Norm all gotten a little too comfortable? They’ve enjoyed great success here and all have incredible job security. Maybe they aren’t putting in the effort required. Is it affecting the way the team plays? Maybe that’s the case, maybe it’s not. I don’t know. But what I do know is that the coaches at Iowa are very predictable. I think I could predict, with 90% accuracy, the type of play they will call. And God forbid we get the ball with less than 2 minutes in the half…that’s a recipe for taking a knee and going to the locker room. So vanilla. Can we please try to make some plays? What’s the worst that could happen? We throw an interception and it gets returned for a TD. Ok, sure that would suck. But the odds of that happening are pretty small. Just throw it up to McNutt! He can make some plays!!
Look, I don’t want to sound like I want Kirk fired. I don’t. He’s done great things for the university and I have great memories of attending games at Kinnick. All I’m saying is we need to be in attack mode more, don’t be so vanilla, and get your players ready for the damn games!!
