Don’t Give Up, Don’t Ever Give Up
With Jimmy V Week 2011 ending recently, I thought it would be a good idea to write about something a little more important than Mark Buehrle going to Miami or the start of the Bulls season. I know what you’re thinking…what could be more important than the start of the Bulls season? Well, read on. For those of you that don’t know, Jim Valvano was a great college basketball coach, a legend at NC State. He made the NCAA tournament 10 times during his 19 year coaching career. These 10 appearances include 1 NCAA title, 2 visits to the Elite 8, and 1 visit to the Sweet 16. After his coaching career ended, he became a college basketball analyst for ESPN working with Dick Vitale. Unfortunately, though, his life was cut short when he died of cancer on April 28, 1993.
Before his death, Jimmy V gave one of the most inspiring speeches you will ever hear at the 1993 ESPY Awards. He seems so happy and full of life during the speech. He gives us nuggets like “I urge all of you, ALL of you, to enjoy your life, the precious moments you have, to spend each day with some laughter, and some thought, to get your emotions going, to be enthusiastic every day.” And another great quote – “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up, and that’s what I’m going to try to do, every minute that I have left I will thank God for the day and the moment I have.” Sadly, just 8 weeks after giving this speech, Jimmy passed away. Watch his speech, you will not regret it. Take take notice of his great attitude in an incredibly difficult time. We should all take a lesson from him and live every day to the fullest.
